Consider me your “Cheat Code Aunt.” I’ve made the mistakes so you don’t have to. Here is the 30-second version of how to survive tax season without a panic attack.
Decoding the Alphabet Soup (W-2 vs. 1099 and the 1040)
Taxes love acronyms, but they aren't that deep once you know the "cheat code":
W-2: This is the "I have a boss" form. Your employer already took some money out for taxes (rude, I know), and this form just tells the IRS how much.
1099: This is the "I am the boss" form. If you had a side hustle, did DoorDash, or sold vintage clothes, you’re getting one of these. Warning: No one took taxes out of this money yet, so we need to account for that.
1040: This is the "Main Character" of tax forms. It’s the actual document you (or your software) fill out to tell the IRS your whole story for the year. The W-2s and 1099s are just the supporting cast members that help you finish your 1040.
The "W" (Wins) vs. the "L" (Losses)
We’re aiming for a "W" here: a refund. But first, let's clear up two terms that even "real" adults mix up: Deductions vs. Credits.
Tax Deductions (The Lower-Your-Score Move): These lower the amount of your income that can be taxed. If you made $40,000 but have $1,000 in deductions, the IRS pretends you only made $39,000.
Common Win: Student Loan Interest. If you’re stressed about that student loan payout, this is a huge win. You can often deduct the interest you paid all year.
Tax Credits (The Straight-Cash Move): These are even better. They are a dollar-for-dollar reduction of the actual tax you owe. If you owe $1,000 but have a $1,000 credit, you now owe $0.
Common Win: Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for lower-income earners or Education Credits if you're still taking classes.
The Ultimate Shortcut (Standard vs. Itemized)
Before you start saving every single coffee receipt, listen to this: Most of you will take the Standard Deduction.
Standard Deduction: This is the ultimate "cheat code" shortcut. The government says, "We won't tax this specific chunk of your income (usually around $14,600 for singles), no questions asked."
Itemized Deduction: This is where you list out every single thing (charity, medical bills, etc.). Unless your specific "L's" add up to more than the standard amount, just take the shortcut and move on with your life. I only starting hitting this threshold when I a bought a house. Deducting mortgage interest and property taxes put me over the standard deduction threshold.
Where to File (Without Getting Scammed)
Don't pay $100 to file a simple return. That is not the vibe.
If you made under $79,000, use IRS Free File. It’s honest-to-goodness free. Use it, get your refund, and pay that electricity bill or treat yourself to a win.
